10 Video Games That Ignored PERFECT Endings

2. Final Fantasy X (2001)

Red Dead Redemption 2
Square

Now, this may be a controversial entry, especially given how the final zinger of Final Fantasy X plays into Final Fantasy X-2. However, it must be noted that FFX came so close to achieving a perfect ending, only to spoil it.

The climax of this epic game is both triumphant and sad, with the party defeating Sin, the big bad, but losing the protagonist Tidus in the process. You watch through tears as Yuna professes her love to him before he disappears. She then delivers a powerful speech to the citizens of Spira, honouring those they've lost and pledging to rebuild the world.

Emotional, romantic, bittersweet, hopeful, this ending has it all in droves. However, despite all of that impeccable emotional weight, sticking around after the credits undermines it all, as a short scene plays of Tidus reawakening underwater before swimming to the surface with a cheesy grin on his face.

While his actual fate and location are left ambiguous, his reappearance nevertheless strips away the tragedy of losing him, ending the game on a whimper rather than the carefully choreographed gut punch it was before.
