4. Another World
The classic action platformer Another World is a highly cinematic experience following a genius scientist who accidentally ends up on an alien planet. Like Dragon's Lair, the game is filled with trial and error sequences and tons of different ways to die. Also like Dragon's Lair, Another World starts off with an underwater tentacle monster that can kill you right from the off.
The action begins with the game's protagonist appearing inside a pool of water. Players had just been watching a cut-scene and many hadn't realised that it was over, as the switch from cinematic to in-game action is actually quite abrupt, meaning that plenty of players were simply staring at the screen to see what happened next, rather than actually pushing any buttons.
If you don't act fast in the game's first couple of seconds and swim up to safety, tentacles appear from the bottom of the screen and pull the protagonist to his doom, resulting in an instant game over for any players who weren't paying attention.
