10 Video Games That Let You Kill God
5. Final Fantasy IX (2000)
There does seem to be a recurring theme in JRPGs of gods being able to be taken down by the 'power of friendship'.
An overly cynical observation this may be, but regardless, Final Fantasy IX is one that opts for another mythological character being the final obstacle between you and the end of the game.
All throughout Final Fantasy IX, your party is led to believe that their main threat is a man named Kuja, an eccentric sorcerer whose sights are set on ruling the world of Gaia. And sure, you do chase him all the way to the Crystal World to call him out on his craziness. But as he's defeated, in strolls something far, far worse.
His fear of dying has summoned Necron, a Stygian entity intent on destroying life to end everyone's suffering. Clearly, your party has no tolerance for all this melodrama, so they put him to the sword, spear and sorcery in a pretty tense endgame showdown.
He could've done with a bit more buildup, in fairness, but whichever way you look at it, you've just killed a god, so feel good about that.
