In some religions, the Creator of the universe is also prophesied to be the Destroyer - and in the case of Xenoblade Chronicles, this universe's Creator just happened to acquire that title by destroying the old one.

Originally a human scientist named Klaus, Lord Zanza became the ruler of a new universe created through an ambitious experiment. He possesses the game's protagonist, Shulk, as a child, and communicates with him years later in the body of a giant named Arglas.

When Arglas is killed, Zanza is reborn as an angelic humanoid with a slight resemblance to Shulk, and it's at this point that he reveals his intentions: to give rise to an endless cycle of creation and destruction of existence, granting him a purpose for all eternity.

Though subsequent fights with him see Zanza go through a couple of other deadly forms, his twisted goal remains the same.

After the final battle, Shulk's Monado sword is imbued with the power to kill gods, and, unsurprisingly, he proceeds to do just that with one clean slice.
