7. Trying Too Hard To Reboot - DmC

The hardest thing about creating a cool character is making their appealing demeanour seem effortless. A person never comes across as a badass if they're trying to look like one.

By this logic, Devil May Cry's Dante shouldn't work as a character, since he tries way too hard to be cool. Because we see him shooting pool with demons, fighting the forces of evil with a guitar and surfing on missiles, this demon hunter could come across as a parody.

But Dante gets away with it because he's in on the joke. If he took his campy antics seriously, it would be far more cringey.

Sadly, that's what the studio did when they decided to reboot the franchise. In DmC: Devil May Cry, our lead trades his cocksure bravado for whiny angst.

Now, you have to commend Ninja Theory for attempting to reinvent the series. Dante's too-cool-for-school shtick was getting a bit tiresome, so it was understandable why the developers wanted to shake things up.

However, Dante's newfound apathy doesn't gel with Devil May Cry's over-the-top world. It would be like remaking Super Mario with the same cartoony aesthetic, but tweaking the Italian plumber into an intricately complex tragic figure. Even if it was a compelling character, it would still jar with the the setting.

Fortunately, the developers learned the error of their ways, bringing back the original Dante for the follow-up.
