10 Video Games That Make Losing Truly Painful

This zombie apocalypse simulator, originally a Mod for Arma II, is one of the most hardcore survival games of the last decade. Its popularity saw it release as a standalone game back in 2013 and it's telling that my memories of being hunted down in Chernarus are just as vivid now as they were then.

If you decide to explore the huge map then be aware that every single tree, rock or window can hide someone looking to steal your shiny night vision goggles or just the shirt off your back. It really is a free for all out there.

Struggling for every piece of gear is what makes dying in Dayz so painful... you'll lose it all and have to start penniless again. The odds being so heavily stacked against you is, strangely, what makes progression so addictive to this day. I struggle to remember a game where progression is so rewarding and simultaneously so risky.

When your twenty hours plus character takes a headshot from half a mile away by a gillie-suited pro gamer you'll really know how it feels to lose everything. Then, this truly unique shooter will drag you back into its realistic uphill struggle once again.
