3. TimeSplitters

Many post-N64 shooters have tried to capture the madcap multiplayer mayhem and boundless customizability of Rare’s Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark.

Yet, only Free Radical Design’s TimeSplitters trilogy truly nailed it (which isn’t surprising considering that the developer had several ex-Rare employees in its ranks). The fact that it also housed an irreverently risqué and self-aware sense of humor, as well as myriad pop culture allusions, made it that much greater.

Over the past fifteen years, speculation around a new TimeSplitters game has ebbed and flowed, with spokespeople for Crytek UK (who purchased FRD in 2009) and Koch Media (who acquired the rights to the franchise in 2018) going back and forth about the reality of TimeSplitters 4 being underway. For now, though, it seems like there is no chance for a proper fourth entry in the lineage.

However, hope lies in TimeSplitters Rewind, a fan-led rejuvenation comprised of the best bits from the trilogy. Despite housing some modernizations, the team promises to maintain the look and feel of those classic 7th generation gems.

The most recent progress update came in February 2021, so fingers crossed that it gets unleashed relatively soon and lives up to expectations.
