When Sony announced post-apocalyptic zombie game Days Gone at E3 in 2016, excitement started to grow for what looked to be another one of PlayStation’s gritty and grounded, story-driven exclusives. The action was fast and frantic, and protagonist Deacon St John looked to be another gruff but sympathetic hero who audiences could root for.

When the game launched, however, it failed to meet most of these expectations. Despite the picturesque Oregon setting acting as a stunning backdrop to explore whilst hordes of “freakers” made for genuine threats, the overall gameplay loop that Days Gone is built upon isn't as engaging.

Aside from a charismatic performance from Sam Witwer as Deacon, Days Gone takes itself far too seriously for its own good as far as it becomes difficult to become invested in what’s intended to be a hard-hitting post-apocalyptic plot.

The repetitive and uninspired missions alongside an empty open world likewise do little to spark interest in Deacon’s hunt for his thought-to-be-dead wife. And when the plot drags on for up to a whopping 60 hours, it’s understandable why the monotony became too much to endure for some.
