10 Video Games That Overstayed Their Welcome
6. Mafia 3 (2016)
Taking place in New Bordeaux, a fictionalised version of New Orleans, in 1968, Mafia III sees players take control of Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay as he works to take down the various gangs controlling the city
Set to a euphoric sixties soundtrack and unafraid to confront hard-hitting themes of race within a post-Vietnam America, Mafia III is a thoughtful and brilliantly written game bolstered by superb performances. Likewise, key missions like a bank heist, infiltrating a river boat, and sneaking through an abandoned theme park help to keep the main plot engaging throughout.
Outside of these major plot beats, though, Mafia III descends into a monotonous and lifeless slog.
Before starting a key story mission, though, the game requires Lincoln to complete the same series of tasks for what feels like an eternity. These involve the standard open world affair of eliminating targets and infiltrating heavily guarded areas to complete minor objectives.
With little variation between each of these throughout the span of the entire game, playing the game becomes an unnecessary chore.
Combined with a lifeless open world that doesn't even have the convenience of fast travel, the standout story missions are barely worth the effort of unlocking them.
