10 Video Games That Prove 2010 Was The Best Year Ever
6. Heavy Rain
If games were measured purely by the actual gameplay alone, Heavy Rain would be further down the list or might even drop out entirely. However, toss in the music, characterisation and pacing and Heavy Rain shoots back up. Criticism that it’s essentially a play along movie is well deserved, but if you go in expecting that it’s a gripping experience from start to finish.
As such an outlier amongst the more traditional games around, Heavy Rain is an essential title if you want to experience everything games have to offer. The atmosphere is tense throughout and while the story has inconsistencies along the way, it digs its claws into you and every twist makes you feel something.
David Cage, the writer and director of Heavy Rain, has been criticised for a lack of subtly over the years. However, that’s much more obvious in later releases Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human than it is here.
It has its detractors, no doubt about that. By many people’s definitions, it’s not even a game at all. But those who can see past its flaws will find a dark, absorbing gem waiting for them.
