3. Super Mario Galaxy 2
While not as indelibly linked to the console as Wii Sports are even Mario Kart, make no mistake: Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the best game the Wii ever had. Like a few great Nintendo games of the era, it’s a shame it was slightly dismissed by the masses because of the Wii’s family friendly, casual gamers image.
The Switch has done a better job of appealing to core gamers, and as such Mario Odyssey has been rightly showered with praise. Comparing it to Super Mario Galaxy 2 though, you’ll see a lot of the groundwork being laid.
In many ways, this is still the baseline for what a great platformer is. The hub world was interesting, the level design was fun, creative and beautifully built to its themes and the boss battles were brilliant on top.
It's in the more difficult half of the Mario catalogue, but any deaths always feel earned. There's no bad or gimmicky design here; it's just tricky, and once you get used to what the game is asking for, you get a rush bigger than Mario when he eats those magic mushrooms. No, not those kind.
