10 Video Games That Prove 2010 Was The Best Year Ever
2. Red Dead Redemption
In any other year this open world western would’ve come out on top. Red Dead Redemption 2 has delivered and then some this year, but when you play through John Marston’s story it’s easy to see why fans have been clamouring for a follow up these past eight years.
The gameplay speaks for itself (and honestly, who hasn’t played this by now?), but what takes RDR from a great game to an era defining one is the craftsmanship involved. The ending shot of the main storyline is one of the most heartbreaking in gaming, and the storytelling has depth as well as breadth.
The mysterious dapper gentleman (God? Satan?) who appears at sporadic intervals has an eerie haunting quality, and the themes of old versus new echo loud throughout the narrative. There’s John fighting against his past, only for his death to lead to his son carving out a similar future as he seeks revenge. And the railroad tracks carving through the map is symbolic of the wheels of progress cutting mercilessly through the Old West.
Hard to take the artistry too seriously there when you’re going for the Dastardly achievement. Still, 5G is 5G, right?
