10 Video Games That Punish You For Cheating

8. You Can't Unlock The Next Level - Perfect Dark

Runescape
Rare

Legendary N64 first-person shooter Perfect Dark has a decidedly less sophisticated method for trolling cheaters, but one that works exceedingly well all the same.

As with Rare's previous shooter GoldenEye 007, beating a level from the single-player campaign with a cheat active prevents you from doing the most basic and expected of things - unlocking the next level, and in turn unlocking the next cheat.

Furthermore, the end-of-mission scorecard will list your mission status as "cheated," and your agent status as "dishonoured," in case you weren't yet sure how Rare feels about you cheating your way through the entire campaign on an initial playthrough.

Ironically, even cheats which actually make the game harder - such as those that give enemies better weapons and shields - won't allow you to advance to the next level, ensuring you need to do it the way Rare actually intended in order to keep progressing.

Clearly, the developer wanted you to save the cheats for your second playthrough, the cheeky so-and-sos.
