10 Video Games That Punish You For Cheating

6. Corrupting The Game Cart Forever - Donkey Kong 64

Runescape
Nintendo

While most of the cheater punishments on this list are kinda hilarious or at least totally interesting, there's one that arguably crosses the line, and that's Rare's method for dealing with anyone who dares to use a GameShark with Donkey Kong 64.

The GameShark was a cartridge which could be inserted into the N64 and allowed players to unlock cheats for a wide variety of games, but in the case of DK64, it had some seriously dire consequences.

As soon as the game detected a GameShark, Donkey Kong would start to convulse around uncontrollably, die in a single hit, and couldn't pick up any items, among other peculiar anomalies.

Worse still, removing the GameShark wouldn't stop this from happening, and most egregiously of all, even restarting the game anew wouldn't help either - your cartridge was now permanently corrupted.

It was one hell of a cruel way for Rare and Nintendo to thumb their nose at cheaters, especially as a good number of the people using the GameShark on Donkey Kong 64 were probably kids. Yikes.
