10 Video Games That Punish You For Taking Shortcuts

3. Frying Pan - Fable

Lionhead

One of the most powerful items in Fable is a magical frying pan that possesses five augment slots, the largest number of them in the game.

The only problem is that in order to obtain it, you have to finish a long and boring scavenger hunt where you look for six clues all over the Orchard Farm area.

However, if you've already played the game and know where the pan is hidden, you can technically go there and dig it up without the clues. Except this will completely ruin your all-powerful item.

Unfortunately, the pan that you find without checking out the clues is completely different from the one you get for completing the quest. Due to Fable's scripts, the correct pan spawns only after the player has found all the clues. The one that lies in its location until that point is a fake placeholder one, without any of the augment slots that make it so powerful. Even worse, when you pick up the false pan, you will permanently prevent yourself from finding the real deal.

Well, at least you can still whip up a mean omelette on it. Provided you don't mind cooking on top of a creepy human face.
