10 Video Games That Punish You For Trying To Be Cool

9. Dashing Makes You Trip Over - Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Dashing is a basic aspect of movement in the Super Smash Bros. series, but beyond that, it looks pretty damn cool. Too cool for Nintendo, apparently, who seemingly felt that peacocking players had to be brought back down to Earth in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The game contentiously introduced the concept of tripping, whereby players could be forced to trip over due to various attacks, but far worse, there was a 1% chance that a player would trip whenever they performed a dash.

Fans expressed near-universal disdain for Nintendo's decision to add such an irritating random element into the core gameplay, in a misguided attempt to close the skill gap between players.

Beyond the obvious issues it created with the competitive scene, of introducing chance into a "serious" contest, it simply penalised players for doing something as basic-yet-neat as moving across the ground at a quicker speed. Not cool, Nintendo.

Thankfully the blowback was severe enough that tripping hasn't ever appeared in a Smash game since.
