10 Video Games That Punish You For Trying To Be Cool

8. Turning Into A Dragon Triggers A Game Over - Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is a textbook example of a game that dangles a freakin' awesome ability right in front of your nose but then teaches you a very nasty lesson if you dare try to use it.

The RPG is centered around the D-Counter, which keeps track of the player's use of powerful dragon abilities and steadily climbs up to 100%. Reaching 100% will cause protagonist Ryu to turn into a dragon, which sounds great, right?

Wrong. Reaching 100% will suddenly trigger a brutal Game Over sequence in which Ryu is killed when Odjn, the dragon residing within him, violently, explosively bursts out of his body in merciful silhouette.

Though Ryu is able to reach 100% later in the game as part of the story, throughout the core gameplay it's nothing more than a one-way ticket to a dirt nap.

The appeal of going Full Dragon clearly speaks for itself, so this one feels like an especially maddening "punishment."
