10 Video Games That Should've NEVER Got Sequels
3. The Last Of Us
Sequel: The Last Of Us Part II
It wouldn't be a stretch to say the sequel to The Last of Us was "slightly" divisive upon release. While critics and fans alike met The Last of Us with widespread praise, its sequel has created a hotbed of dissenting opinions.
No one was expecting a happy-go-lucky adventure in this post-apocalyptic world (especially after The Last of Us' shocker of an opening). But Naughty Dog turned up the emotional torment and then some. Every scene takes the incredibly dark and distressing tone and bashes it over the players head again and again.
The Last of Us Part II is emotionally exhausting to play, and while it makes sense in context with thematics, for some players it was too much.
As if there wasn't enough suffering attached to The Last of Us Part II, reports of Naughty Dog employees working ridiculous crunch-time shifts soiled the sequel's release. The news brought into question if this type of AAA game development was viable for workers in the game industry.
In all honesty, Naughty Dog could have easily left The Last of Us as a stand-alone. Besides, The Last of Us Part II's pay-off to Ellie discovering what happened at the end of the last game is glossed over in flashbacks, demoted to a B-plot.
