Beyond Games

With the veritable boatload of PS1-era first-person shooters, it's not surprising that a lot of titles have been lost in the crowd, forgotten by all except those whose childhoods in the late '90s were built around such games.

Redline very much belongs in this category. Despite middling reviews, the game offers an energetic mash-up of traditional shooter mayhem and high-speed vehicular action, making for a harmlessly fun experience all in all.

Set in 2066, in a Mad Max-esque post-apocalyptic hellhole, Redline hurls the player straight into the action, and lying in wait at the end of the first level for you is the Red Sixer leader, a hulking mutant who, in any other setting, would realistically be able to tear you limb from limb.

Although you defeat him, the leader survives until the end of the game, at which point he gives you a final showdown in an insanely powerful hovering tank.

The switch-up here, is that you're now able to fight him in your car, and, compared to your first fight, it's clear to you just how far the ante has been upped since your playthrough began.
