10 Video Games That Totally Wasted Their Biggest Selling Point
2. The Arkham Knight's Reveal Isn't A New Character - Batman: Arkham Knight
One of the biggest PR blunders in gaming history, and one made all the million times worse by Rocksteady and Warner Bros. reinforcing the idea that the titular Arkham Knight was "a brand new character".
Fan theories flooded the internet despite them being adamant he was created just for the game, and it wasn't long before we'd zeroed in on the AK being either being Jason Todd, Azrael or perhaps Damon Wayne at a push. Still, Rocksteady had a marketing campaign to (understandably) uphold, and so we kept getting the same rhetoric about his reveal being a landmark event; a tact that manifested in-game as Batman literally grabbing his mask and growling "WHO.ARE.YOU?!"
Thing is, from the very first thing the Knight says ("Time to die, old man") we knew it was Todd all along. From then on out the Arkham Knight's character was Jason Todd 101, complete with snivelling "You wouldn't understand, it's personal!" remarks in regards to his motivations, and a late-game allegiance-switch you could see coming a mile off.
It's not that Rocksteady shouldn't of hid their biggest selling point - if anything, they just wanted to reinforce the surprise of it being Todd all along - but for the script they knew everything was going to fall back on, it should've done a far better job of dissuading fans from going with their immediate gut feeling.
