10 Video Games That Tried Too Hard
7. Radical Heights - The Battle Royale That Failed To Take Off
Okay so it feels a bit unfair to have another Cliff Bleszinski/Boss Key Productions game on this list, I simply don't think it can be helped. Radical Heights was created out of pure desperation and necessity as a last-ditch effort, after the failed Lawbreakers, to keep the studio. While I absolutely admire the paradigm shift here as well as the courage it takes to make such a crazy change in direction, trying to take from the best of your competition will likely lead to a failed game. Such is the case with Radical Heights, an 80s inspired battle royale with some unique gameplay concepts, but ultimately a game that just looked too much like its competition, namely Fortnite, to garner any sort of critical success.
Pulling away players who have spent literally dozens upon hundreds of hours in their favorite battle royale of the time whether that be Fortnite or PUBG, was always going to be a major uphill battle. Yet, Radical Heights persisted, trying to lure players to their very early access game. While I admire the fact that the studio was upfront and honest about the game being in very early access, to the point of even using that as a marketing tactic, players weren't captivated by a game that looked janky and buggy and lacked overall content. Had Radical Heights released prior to Fortnite and PUBG, then perhaps it would have had a captive audience for the long haul, but as it stands it was simply another battle royale lost to the storm.
