10 Video Games That Tried Too Hard
6. Resident Evil 6 - What's The Best Part Of A Horror Game? Not The Action.
Resident Evil 6 surely needs no introduction, yet I am going to try. What do you think is the absolute best part of any good and scary survival horror game? Did you answer, the bombastic and action heavy combat? Me neither. Despite that, Resident Evil 6 decided that the best direction to go was that of an action movie with some elements of horror thrown in for good measure. I'm not sure fans of the series were asking for this, yet Capcom decided it was best to double down on the action of Resident Evil 5 instead of the sublime horror components of the legendary Resident Evil 4. While Resident Evil 6 did have a couple of moments of tension and terror, specifically in Leon's campaign, it was thoroughly overshadowed by the rest of the action game set pieces.
I am starting to see a theme in this list, whereby, the games that try too hard seem to be the ones that pick and choose from the competition instead of truly innovating. It's quite clear in hindsight that Capcom were hoping to appeal to every type of player instead of focusing on the series' strengths; it's pure survival horror components. Resident Evil 6 allowed itself to fall into the trappings of more is better, but in this case the more being action, not scares. Fortunately Capcom learned from this and ultimately changed their direction with the frightening Resident Evil 7, but up until that time, their survival horror franchise was starting down the path of monotony. My friends, good survival horror thrives on the that less is more, a concept which would have truly benefited Resident Evil 6.
