10 Video Games That Tried Too Hard
4. Star Citizen - Just How Many Features Is Enough?
Star Citizen has been in development for the better part of nearly a decade. It's no surprise this game has become so notorious in games media due to the fact that it simply never releases, despite hundreds of millions of dollars of player-backed funding. Yes, this game has continued to this day to still receive millions upon millions of dollars to go towards its development. Yet Star Citizen has still not actually released. While there are probably numerous issues as to why this might be, a majority of this seems to come down to feature creep and over-promising. Remember Peter Molyneux and how he talked up the original Fable but simply failed to deliver on the majority of the touted features? Well, multiply that by about a thousand and you are left with Star Citizen.
Star Citizen was and still is promising its loyal players as well as newcomers with hundreds upon hundreds of hours of strategic and exciting space action set in a massive universe to explore. From massive space battles to navigating various planets and stars to customizing your own ship; these features are just a few of the aspects that Star Citizen is still working on properly releasing to its fanbase.
Robert Space Industries' head honcho Chris Roberts has even stated that the development time has been lengthened due to immense feature creep. What started out as one initial giant space epic with years of gameplay, eventually turned into a solo campaign separate from the massive multiplayer component. With funding still being accepted to this day and no release window insight, it's quite clear that enough is enough and the team needs to wrap this game up and release it in its entirety to its loyal community.
