10 Video Games That Were Basically One Big Apology

4. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

Previous installments of Call of Duty were mainly focused on futuristic conflicts, which had more in common with running up walls than breaching them. Fans made it clear after Infinite Warfare released, that futuristic combat was not the direction the franchise should focus on.

Interestingly, Infinity Ward started working on a remaster of Modern Warfare soon after the release of Infinite Warfare.

By revisiting Modern Warfare, they were also revelling in the high point in the series, where the developers had achieved the almost perfect medium of a gripping single player campaign, twinned with an enjoyable and long lasting multiplayer.

The campaign was considered one of the best ever, and helped satiate fans who thought too much emphasis was placed on the multiplayer modes in previous games.

The tone and combat was more grounded in realism, with moral choices a refreshing addition, helping players ponder their actions rather than crashing through buildings and killing everything that moved.

Some aspects of the story were criticised, such as a section where you control a child soldier, but this could be construed as an attempt by developers Infinity Ward to add more complex layers to the story, which in previous titles had sometimes verged into parody.
