10 Video Games That Were Secretly Judging You The Whole Time
5. EXP - Undertale
Undertale's twist on the classic RPG formula is a well-known fact at this point, but that is exactly why it needs to be brought up here. It's basically your textbook example of how a game can trick a player into thinking their actions have no consequences when, in reality, it's actually judging them all the time.
The game features a deceptively basic-looking leveling system. You start with your "LV" set to 1 and can increase it up to LV 20 by defeating enemies and gaining "EXP." If you don't pay much attention and treat Undertale as any other turn-based RPG, it just looks like you are leveling up your character by grinding and fighting bosses.
However, once you reach the end of the game, your character is judged by Sans, who explains that in reality LV isn't an abbreviation of "level" or "love, but rather the player's "level of violence." Similarly, EXP stands for execution points.
Killing even one creature will already label you a murderer and prevent you from reaching the Good Ending on your run. If you never stop to think and wonder why the game includes a mercy button, Well, let's just say you're going to have a bad time.
