7. Tetris Effect

We’ve seen many different versions of Tetris over the years. Featuring a set of differently shaped blocks, known as Tetrominos, your aim is to fill a whole line with blocks to clear them and earn points.

It’s hard to beat the conventional formula but several developers have experimented with it to varying degrees of success. Looking to create a musically inspired take on the Tetris formula, Rez and Space Channel 5 producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi pitched the idea back in 2012.

Revealed as part of Sony’s E3 2018 announcements, stages would be split into three sections after clearing a set number of lines, defined by differing musical and visual cues.

It takes its name from the Tetris Effect phenomenon, when people devote so much attention to an activity that they picture it in their mental images and dreams.

Unlike the other games, this wasn’t exclusively designed for Virtual Reality and can be played normally but when compared, VR brings in that greater, more in-depth presentation.

Boasting gorgeous visuals and an outstanding soundtrack, all whilst retaining classic Tetris gameplay, it’s a cinematic experience worth your time.
