Halo: Reach's story was known long before the game's release, but it didn't make finally seeing the fall of an entire planet any easier to swallow.

The game was never about winning the fight, but about the bravery of those involved and showing how losing a battle doesn't mean losing an entire war.

Players fight alongside Noble team as new recruit Noble Six. As they investigate a communications blackout and end up facing an alien invasion no one was prepared for.

Throughout the game, players slowly watch the Covenant swallow up the entire planet and rain down hellfire from space. One by one your squad of Spartans are killed, battling on despite the clear suicide mission they're undertaking.

It all ends with a small victory, as the heroes make a final push to save the Pillar of Autumn which does manage to escape the planet. We get to play as Noble six's last stand and no matter what you do, eventually, you die and the events of Halo: Combat Evolved begin.

In the end, it is all or naught and the Covenant reign victorious and glass the planet into a cold, dead wasteland.
