10 Video Games Where You Unexpectedly Swap Characters

6. Mass Effect 2

Red Dead Redemption John Jack
BioWare

Near the end of Mass Effect 2, players briefly have control of Commander Shepard taken away after they depart the Normandy in a shuttle.

Naturally it's mere moments later that the Normandy is attacked by the Collectors, who quickly board the ship and start wreaking havoc. And so, players are then forced into the role of fan favourite pilot Joker as he attempts to get the Normandy to safety.

The "mission" - if you can even call it that - lasts just a matter of minutes and doesn't amount to much more than running around the bowels of the ship as the Collectors lay waste to your crew-mates.

However, after spending the prior 90% of the game playing as the ultra-capable Shepard, this was a clever - if mercifully temporary - shift of perspective, confirming how terrifying such a scenario would be for the "regular" folk.
