The Call of Duty franchise has admittedly split its campaigns between numerous characters since its inception, allowing players to fill the boots of several different soldiers fighting in various different countries and conflicts.

But the groundbreaking original Modern Warfare did something a little more out-there which absolutely nobody saw coming.

Though players spend the first two missions of the game being introduced to protagonist Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish, the third mission abruptly thrusts the player into the body of President Yasir Al-Fulani, who has been kidnapped by terrorist Khaled Al-Asad.

While technically more of an interactive cutscene than an out-and-out mission, it nevertheless offers up a grim depiction of Al-Asad's violent coup, culminating in Al-Fulani himself being executed with a gunshot to the head, all experienced by the player from his perspective.

This was a uniquely horrifying way to make the player hate Al-Asad, and though the game ultimately switches between numerous military personnel throughout, that brief spell playing as a helpless, doomed man was brilliantly shocking.
