10 Video Games Where You Unexpectedly Swap Characters

4. Alien: Isolation

The overwhelming majority of Alien: Isolation casts players in the role of Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda as she investigates her mother's disappearance and, yes, faces off against a relentless Xenomorph.

But half-way through the game, Amanda briefly interacts with shady Anesidora captain Henry Marlow, prompting a flashback mission in which players take control of Marlow as he explores the derelict from the original movie.

In addition to being a fantastic dose of fan service as players get to gawk at the lovingly recreated interiors of the derelict, the flashback also confirms the circumstances through which Sevastopol Station came to be infested with Xenomorphs: Marlow's wife was attacked by a Facehugger, and he brought her to the station to receive aid.

While some might argue that switching characters strips away some of the game's claustrophobic, boxed-in tension, it was absolutely worth it for the satisfying blast of nostalgia.
