5. Hotel Basement - The Last Of Us

Naughty Dog

There isn't a person on Earth who would accuse Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us of being a casual, easygoing way to pass the time. But in a game full of stressful levels, none of them hold a candle to the hotel basement.

And you're going to need that candle because the first thing that makes the basement so traumatizing is its complete pitch darkness. For a long time there isn't a single enemy. But in your heart of hearts you know that can't be true. Worse, you're waist deep in water with no clear exit, so forget any potential getaway plans.

Once you find the generator, it doesn't take a genius to guess the noise from starting it will attract every mushroom zombie in the area. First you hear their screeches and then you're swarmed by sneaky stalkers and one big, deadly bloater. The bloater is slow but that's why the weaker stalkers are there to harass you. While you search the dark for a way out, that bloater is getting closer and closer.

Players dread this level even on repeated playthroughs, especially if you challenge yourself on harder difficulties. Even when you have a tested strategy it's still hard not to panic.
