7. The Story, Characters, Dialogue Etc. - Destiny
The debacle around Destiny's production and reception will reverberate around the halls of gaming history for decades to come; it's just too potent a cocktail of broken promises and half-baked satisfaction to ever truly ignore.
As such, in 2015, Kotaku published a very lengthy deep-dive into all the things that went wrong across the game's development, revealing the pretty shocking fact that in 2013, Bungie completely overhauled almost everything about what Destiny 'was', from tone to characters and especially the story, which was scrapped and rewritten from scratch. The result was a gameplay engine that held together perfectly, but whose trimmings were rotten, with a complete lack of narrative thrust, flat line deliveries and empty story moments.
It was unfinished, plain and simple.
The coming years saw the team release DLC and revised mythology implementation - most prominent in the positively-received The Taken King expansion - but it was all too late. There are still cutscenes from the 2013 dev diaries that are yet to make it into the game, with a focus on microtransactions and even talk of a 'Destiny 2' being prioritised to make a fresh start - yet the original product remains broken and forgotten about.
