9. Starcraft

The Starcraft franchise has been around since 1998, and despite being one of the most popular games of its type, there have only been two core titles released in all that time. Of course, there have been remasters, updates, and several expansions, but only two games: StarCraft and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

This begs the question, why would a game as popular as StarCraft only feature two core titles? The answer is simple; the game is so well-made, difficult to master, and nuanced; there really isn't a need to keep pushing out sequel after sequel when fans are more than happy to keep playing the same games over and over again.

Professional StarCraft players have been honing their skills for years, many having started when the first game was released. The game's single-player campaign features an engrossing story, filled with the franchise's lore, but the real money comes in playing competitively, and that has an intense learning curve.

The people who really know how to play will slaughter you in moments. While you're still trying to figure out where to place your barracks, they will have 250 enemies rushing your meager defences.

It takes hundreds of hours to master this game, and most players never will.
