10 Video Games You Can Never Admit You Haven't Played

5. Mario 64

The forever-friendzone'd Mario is one of the only characters from the old school still showing everyone how it's done - through the likes of Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Bros. there's not one mass demographic-pleasing genre his red cap doesn't tower over.

However, his untouchable status as the grandaddy of platforming wouldn't be in place if not for simply inventing the very idea of it in the first place.

Even the fact that Mario 3D worked at all was a miracle in itself at the time - a similar problem every 2D-born franchise has, just look at SpongeBob's new movie - but Nintendo didn't stop there. Everything from whirling the viewpoint around to get a bead on where you were in the level - and finding Lakitu holding a tiny camera atop a cloud - to the invention of collectibles within a 3D space and the general idea of a gigantic (at the time) open world, if you name any of your favourite games chances are they owe almost everything to Mario 64.
