Being the first interactive movie on the Sega CD, Night Trap immediately stood out amongst its peers. The fact this horror game depicted murder scenes in real-life footage also helped Night Trap generate a ton of buzz.

But due to the abysmal script, appalling acting, and smutty content, this Sega title was seen as a tacky gimmick above all else. Also, the controversial violence inspired the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which banned the game from retailers, impairing its sales.

Even thought Night Trap didn't do well critically or financially, it has a few redeeming qualities (none of which are intentional). Firstly, it's impossible not to be entertained by the acting. The cast are so unconvincing while being killed, you'd swear they were channelling the performances of Troll 2.

Because the violence is directly responsible for the creation of ESRB, Night Trap isn't just a game - it's a part of history. For that reason, it's fascinating to play Night Trap, knowing it's influenced every game with adult themes since.

On top of that, it's funny to watch how tame the "scary" elements are by today's standards. If you compare these scenes to horror films released that same year, like Alien 3 and Braindead, you'd never suspect Night Trap drummed up anything resembling a controversy.
