9. Gaunt's Ghosts
The film about the Tanith First-and-Only and their Commander Ibram Gaunt would be a much more tense and personal one than some of the overblown battles you'll find elsewhere on the list. The First-and-Only are named as such because they are the 1st Tanith Regiment, however, Tanith is no more as their home world, along with every other regiment from it was destroyed by the forces of Chaos. They are the first, and only, regiment of their former planet, so that's a big tick in the Tragic backstory column!
The group, better known as Gaunt's Ghosts is known for its stealth and reconnaissance capabilities. This means for the movies we can tell a smaller scale, more personal story and the best opportunity for this would be of their actions on Herodor.
In the middle of a Crusade, the Ghosts were tasked with being bodyguards for the recently resurrected Saint Sabbat. They had to do this while being engaged in a vicious urban war with the forces of Chaos. In the end the Saint was able to take out her target, robbing chaos of one of their best lieutenants and opening up a second front in the war. This could act as a kind of Rogue One to the film series, or even be the perfect slant to become it's on TV show.
