10 Ways Activision Should Make Call Of Duty 2018
5. Open Levels Should Return
Despite adopting a more sandbox-inspired approach to mission design in recent games, WW2 unfortunately reverted back to the classic corridor approach that made earlier Call of Duty titles feel so constricted and linear.
Consequently, no matter where Treyarch decide to set their next entry in the franchise, they should retain their open-world approach to missions. Nothing shatters a grand sense of scale than being funnelled through a battlefield that only has one set route you can't deviate from, and the mark of a great COD campaign is one where the developers effectively mask this handholding.
While linear levels are still welcome, the best moments of WW2 were the few times where players were given free reign to tackle objectives however they wanted, sneaking through enemy encampments and picking their own route through combat engagements. Why the last game returned to corridor shootouts (despite taking place almost entirely outdoors) is unclear, but Treyarch shouldn't make the same mistake with their next release.
