10 Ways Diablo 4 Is Insulting Players
4. Poor Character Development
Diablo's rich history of monstrous demons, warrior angels, and everything in between has been a key staple of its success in both the gaming and literature mediums.
While Lilith, the primary antagonist, promises to be a menace, her ultimate goal is relatively bland by the standards of the series. The Queen of the Succubi plans to drag humanity under her leadership through sin and darkness. From there, the mortals would be used as weapons in Lilith's bitter rivalry with the forces of both Heaven and Hell.
Compared to Skarn's hellish obsession with reigniting the Eternal Conflict in Diablo II, or Malthael's nihilistic war on the Nephalem in Diablo III, Lilith's quest doesn't seem hugely inspired. Worse still, many of the lesser foes in the game are interchangeable, with designs that aren't hugely threatening or distinctive.
The lack of innovation in regards to the cast doesn't stop at the villainy either. Iconic figures such as Deckard Cain and Tyrael famously lit up past entries, wowing players and readers with their extensive backstories and complex motivations. As entertaining as Diablo IV is, the overall quality and depth of the characters is simply not on the level many have come to expect from the series.
