10 Ways Nintendo Switch Can Absolutely Dominate In 2018
4. Launch The Online Subscription Service
Speculation is still rife about how many features the Switch Online will bring to the table, as the details are still sketchy. The outline of the service is that it's primarily for enabling online multiplayer, which is free until the actual launch of Nintendo Switch Online sometime in 2018. It will also let players use voice chat via smartphones or tablets (provided they're on your friends list) and track certain statistics with apps linked to games you've played. The example given by Nintendo is Splatoon 2 with "SplatNet".
But the devil is in the details. E3 is not the traditional place to launch an online service unless there's a specific title being launched to take advantage of it. But then Nintendo may have an ace up their sleeve and offer both Pokémon and Smash Bros. Switch to really stoke demand for the online service going into the lucrative third and fourth quarters of the year.
That's not even to mention the successor to the wildly popular Virtual Console: has Nintendo axed the idea completely to focus on their 'Classic Game Selection' offered on rotation? Banking on millions of players paying comparatively cheap annual subscriptions versus the estimated tens of millions made through Virtual Console seems unwise given the competition.
