10 Ways Red Dead Redemption 2 Can Build On GTA V's Best Features
2. Melee Combat
Whilst it was fun to sneak up on enemies and score brutal stealth kills in Red Dead Redemption, there was a serious lack of melee weaponry, with the focus shifted on to the gunplay. You had the choice of either your fists or a hunting knife, both of which were fun but soon got old due to the repeated animations.
Rockstar kicked the boat out in Grand Theft Auto V with over 15 melee weapons available in the game. The plethora of ways in which you could use them on unsuspecting foes led to some of the best combat seen in the series, even if you are just attacking hapless civilians.
Further, the Bikers DLC allowed players to kick and use melee weapons whilst commandeering a vehicle, which could be useful on horseback in Red Dead 2.
If you can remember the horrific Master Hunter challenge where you had to fight a Grizzly Bear with only your Hunting Knife in Red Dead Redemption, you'll know why Rockstar need to innovate in this area and draw on their experience with GTA V.
It felt seriously clunky, and led to a fight that was more focused on exploiting the weaknesses in the character animation than having an engaging battle. Hopefully, with the advances in technology we can see more exciting melee combat in a time period where it was still viable in a close-quarters brawl.
