2. Don't Have An Irredeemable Piece Of Sh*t As A Main Character

The very reason John Marston "worked" in this world of immorality and corpse plundering was because he was fundamentally a Good Guy. For the sake of making a video game he had to partake in missions that any "real" person would've ran the other way from, but that only factored into the assumed redemptive arc we were going on. The notion was that John was atoning for past sins, and had to wash his dirty hands one last time to finally become clean.

That... doesn't even remotely work if Arthur Morgan is a black-hearted psychopath on the level of the cannibalistic butcher, Trevor. Yes, he was written to be representative of how everyone plays GTA in the first place - i.e. slaughtering everyone in our way and being a self-serving maniac - but Red Dead Redemption was a far more maturely written tale, one that demands a certain level of empathy with our main character.

Regardless of how you feel about Trevor personally, if he was gunned down at the close of GTA V no matter what, you wouldn't of felt anything even close to the sort of despair and genuine loss we all shared when John Marston bit the big one.

We need a character that's the product of their environment - someone with the POTENTIAL for great evil if we want to indulge our most anarchic thoughts, but an individual that isn't forcing you to be as immature and carefree as possible.
