10 Ways The Gaming Industry Can Improve
9. Take More Risks
Established franchises are often in the sound position they are because of the formula they create. Deviating from the comfy confines of familiarity is never a safe move, and with AAA game development time only getting longer, developers are surely less likely to be bold in their decisions moving forward.
The indie scene is currently the flag-bearer of true innovation and introducing new ideas into the fold, so the cyclical nature of high-budget franchises producing the same thing is starting to feel repetitive.
Pokemon Sword and Shield, Mortal Kombat 11, Borderlands 3 and Rage 2 were certainly all very well crafted, and more often than not met with critical praise, but the failure to deviate from their formula made trudging through their stories and gameplay mechanics feel like the time they took to finish could have been better spent with titles like Baba Is You or Outer Wilds.
The new generation of home consoles is fast approaching, so there's no better time to experiment with new gameplay ideas and alternate approaches to telling a story. Sure, there's definitely a place for the frantic battles in Call of Duty or Fortnite, but with each new instalment of a series developers shouldn't be afraid of taking risks with their darling franchises.
