10 Ways The Gaming Industry Can Improve
6. Shorter, More Concise Games
With the news that NBA 2K21 would bump its price up 10$ for the next-gen version of the game, conversations have been had around the sustainability of AAA games moving into the PS5 and XBOX Series X generation.
Games are getting longer, and this paired with meticulous attention to detail bloats the development cycle of countless major titles, so the consumer is left with a hefty wait between releases.
A game's runtime does not directly equate to value. Final Fantasy VII Remake was a wonderful remaster of one of gaming's magnum opuses, but stretching a 10 hour segment to 40 hours took a great deal of filler, which ruined the story's pace as a result.
Keeping the cost of games down will perhaps come at the sacrifice of length, but telling a concise story or delivering an experience that can be beaten in a weekend has its own unique benefits. No more will you need to scan the internet to remember what's happening with the story, and no longer will it take you 30 hours to see the conclusion of a story-heavy game.
True value can just as easily be found in the compact; saving money and cutting down development time are a bonus.
