10 Ways To Make A Superman Video Game That Won't Suck

1. Invulnerability

Despite it being an issue for developers, apparently, you have to question whether Superman actually has to be invulnerable? And the answer is no. Superman can be harmed and indeed he can be killed as well. The villains shouldn’t only be nameless robots and thugs with guns, but they should also be the kind of world-destroying threats that Superman has to face constantly.

Metallo, General Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday, Parasite, and can all pose a serious physical threat for Superman. There are also elements that harm Superman, such as magic and, of course, kryptonite.

Beyond those villains and threats, the game can also be a progression through Superman’s life. In Superman’s early appearances, he wasn’t as powerful—he couldn’t fly, he could just leap; he was super-durable, but not invulnerable. This was incorporated into the New 52 with Grant Morrison depicting Superman in his early adventures at a far lower level of power.

Both Smallville and Man Of Steel also did this by initially showing Clark at a lower level of power and growing stronger over time.

Starting off early on in Superman’s career when he’s young and not as powerful could help to get players familiar with his general power set, provide a sense of progression and achievement, and also put some real danger against the Man Of Steel even early on.
