Maintaining a consistent narrative in a long-spanning series like the Elder Scrolls series can be quite hard.

Some things that exist in Tamriel's vast world can accidentally contradict each other, while the new stories you want to tell may clash with the things you've already established.

So how does Bethesda maintain consistency in its storytelling?

Simple. They don't. They rely on the convenience of Dragon Break instead.

Dragon Break is a special event in the Elder Scrolls series that Bethesda whips out every time something doesn't line up in their lore.

The most basic explanation of the phenomenon is that it is a divergence in the time-space continuum that causes the game's timeline to split and alter the course of history.

The Elder Scrolls writers have used Dragon Break to get away with several retcons and plot holes, such as making all endings of the Daggerfall canon, and it's actually not even their only such literary device, the other big one being CHIM.

Now, it's nice to have an explanation for all the plot holes, but at the same time, you have to admit it's a bit weird the Elder Scrolls writers wanted to specify how their fantasy physics work in order to get away with them.
