For many, the introduction to 2.5D games would have been games like Trials HD or Deadlight, but there's a little series that did it when the PlayStation launched.
Not Crash Bandicoot, no. That's full 3D.
Pandemonium! is one of those titles that I guarantee people as reminiscent of the PS1 as me will go, "Oh yeah! I vaguely remember that!" and... that'll be it.
Yet for those that did play them, Pandemonium! 1 & 2 are great examples of mid-90's platformers with bright and engaging environments. Plus, you get to play as a jester!
Outside of Kid Clown and Batman, what other games lets you do that?
But what was innovative back then would barely register interest with players now. We've seen platforming games transition well into 3D like Mario and friends, or rekindle 2D nostalgia with Sonic Mania.
The problem with 2.5D is that it's been done to a beautiful degree in games like Ori & The Blind Forest, that something like Pandemonium! now would only dream of aspiring to.
