2. Past Cure

Past Cure is a game that begins badly and gets much, much worse. The opening 10 minutes of this psychological horror-actioner resemble a more repetitive and frustrating version of the infamous nightmare levels from Max Payne, and just might be one of the most awkward and insanely offputting beginnings to any game I've ever played.

A visually drab, narratively incoherent and comically self-serious game that wants to be a jack of all trades - and unsurprisingly becomes a master of none - Past Cure's gunplay, puzzles and especially its stealth mechanics are torturously lifeless and one-note.

It's a rare game so anaemic and boring you might actually start dozing off while playing it. It is a warm cup of cocoa of a video game, minus the sweet, sensory pleasure that alluring description suggests.

But at least it's not quite the very worst game released this year so far...
