6. Forgotten Gaian - Death's Gambit

Speaking of games that desperately want to be Dark Souls, Death’s Gambit is a 2D action platformer that borrows nearly all of its gameplay and stylistic concepts from FromSoftware's ultra-difficult RPG. The only difference is that Death’s Gambit wasn’t afraid to show its lighthearted side from time to time.

The most crucial element of any Souls-inspired game would have to be the boss encounters; if they don’t meet the players expectations, then nothing will. Unfortunately, though Death’s Gambit does put forward some interesting ideas in that regard, many of the fights miss the mark.

Most underwhelming of all would have to be the Forgotten Gaian fight. While large in scale, it’s more annoying than challenging. Most of the encounter’s issues come from the fact that the camera constantly pans in and out in an attempt to capture the stone giant’s size, but it’s more distracting than it needs to be.

What’s more, the fight is actually against Ione, with the Gaian serving as a strange middleman. Half of the fight consists of wantonly smashing at its foot in an effort to bring Ione into striking range, which makes large chunks of the fight feel inconsequential and unnecessary.
