10 Worst Video Game Checkpoints EVER

8. Loose Ends - Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Grand Theft Auto IV

Most of the Call of Duty games are guilty of some dodgy "reactive" checkpointing, in fairness, but this has never proven more egregious than in the otherwise fantastic campaign for Modern Warfare 2.

The climactic level "Loose Ends" is infamous among fans not only for depicting General Shepherd's betrayal and the deaths of both Roach and Ghost, but for its erratic and agonising checkpoints.

At the tail-end of the level, the player has to make a mad dash for the landing zone in order to be extracted - or so you think - while avoiding mortar fire which, on Veteran difficulty in particular, has a nasty habit of homing onto your exact position.

Unfortunately the game tends to respawn players right in the midst of the chaos, effectively trapping them in a cycle of death, save for that lucky attempt where you're finally able to sprint to the LZ unimpeded.

There are several other areas in the level where you're also likely to find yourself caught in an unforgiving checkpoint loop, suggesting the game wasn't sufficiently play-tested on higher difficulties in particular.
