10 Worst Video Game Launches EVER
9. Diablo 3
Diablo 2 is without a doubt one of the most beloved games to have ever graced the PC. Releasing back at the turn of the millennium, it was (and well, still is) played endlessly around the world by Blizzard diehards.
But Diablo 3 launched in 2012, and ten years later, the video game industry was a very different place.
Gone were the days of Activision Blizzard putting out a single game with an add-on or two. Each release was now a product and means to draw in continuous revenue, so this gave way to a real money Auction House.
Sales-wise, Diablo 3 hit 3.5 million on day one, so why is this considered a bad launch? Well, it all comes back around to the Auction House.
In that crucial opening period, Diablo 3 was a game of supply and demand, with a broken meta. Drops after quests weren't up to snuff because the entire experience was designed to draw players back to the Auction House.
And if that also wasn't bad enough, servers were overloaded causing them to constantly disconnect. The Devs seriously underestimated demand for Diablo 3 and on day one, fans that had been waiting 10 years to play were left out in the cold.
Just goes to show if a game is going to be always online, it needs the server real estate to back it up. Thankfully servers were eventually stabilised and the auction side of things was dropped, restoring the game to something more resembling the Diablo 2 experience.
